Nightwish has just returned from a small American tour and is now taking a small break before the real tour begins. But, what do you have in your wallet, Tuomas?
It's a thing I have forgotten there....I don't really believe in any luck charms, and there isn't any particular reason why this is here, but I've carried this with me in my wallet now almost 20 years. This is a ticket to Metallica and Guns'n'Roses gig in September 17th 1992. If we glamorize a bit, I could say that was the night that changed my life - or at least my taste in music. Before that night I hadn't really liked heavy music, I liked more bands like Eppu Normaali, Popeda and Queen. But Metallica hit the jackpot, and converted me in one night. This is a concrete memory from that moment. I probably should laminate this and put on my wall because the texts are starting to fade so badly that it will be impossible to read soon. The funny thing is also that the price of the ticket was 27,50$.
So the concert was in America? Was it the year you were there as an exchange student?
Yeah, I spent one year in Kansas and went to see those bands in Kansas City.
So after that gig you just picked up your instrument and started making heavy music, did it go like that? If we glamorize a bit.
Yes, but only a little bit, because it really went like that. The gig was on Thursday, and the next Monday I went to the record store and bought all Metallica repertoire as C-cassettes. And that's where it all started. Later I discovered Pantera, Dream Theater, Ozzy Osbourne....the whole scene. When I returned home, I was asked to play in a local heavy band...and in a way I'm still on the same road.
Have you ever told this story to the Metallica members?
No, I haven't even met them. In one festival we were at the neighboring backstage area, but that's all. But this kind of story wouldn't probably be anything new to them, I'm sure there's plenty of similar stories in this world when it comes to Metallica.
Ok, good luck for the tour. Let's hope that this was a good time to rest a bit and you will be able to give 100% performance on stage in Finland and later abroad.
Thanks, a month's rest surely is more than enough. I would have settled for less, but let's enjoy it now while it lasts.

Total knockout!
Tuomas Holopainen recieved devastating critique from his favorite composer.
The critiqued song was almost left unpublished.
We're talking about the metal version of the Piano movie theme song, which will be second song of the single The Crow, The Owl And The Dove. The single will be released at the end of this month.
- We recorded the song already back in 2007, at the same time with Dark Passion Pkay.
- Our version has strong guitars and also vocal parts, which the original song doesn't have, Tuomas Holopainen says.
The band sent their version to the original composer Michael Nyman to hear, and asked his permission to release it.
- We got letter from Nyman's publisher, which strictly forbid releasing and playing the song on gigs.
- The letter also stated that our version is total bulls*** and all the recordings must be destroyed, Holopainen laughs.
Fans to the rescue
Despite the strict order the recordings were not destroyed, and now 5 years later The Heart Asks Pleasure First will be released. There hasn't been any changes made to the recording they made in 2007.
- Info about the fate of the song spread amongst our fans and they started to send letters to the original publisher to gain permission to release the song.
- And the campaign helped, Holopainen rejoices.
Holopainen didn't take the devastating critique too seriously, even though it became from someone who he looks up to.
- Michael Nyman is one of my biggest idols, the musician confesses.
- In a way I have to appreciate his strictness to not approve our version, even though he will automatically get all the copyright payments from radio plays and other public performances of the song.
To America in the autumn
Nightwish will head to a long USA tour. Dates have not yet been set, but the tour will start around September-October and last about five weeks.
- We will also play a few shows in Canada, Tuomas Holopainen says.
Nightwish played two shows in California at the end of January. There were almost 5000 people in Gibson Amphitheater, and at the club gig under a secret name the venue was also packed. The large audiences can be explained by Imaginaerum rising to #27 in the USA's official album charts, which is so far the best achievement in the band's history.
- I had to check from internet, was it really true. And it was. It feels somehow unreal, Holopainen describes his feelings.
- The record sales are different in America than for example in Finland. There our albums will sell steadily for a long amount of time after the relase, but here the sales will drop after only a few weeks.
